The WHV Application Process

You’re thinking about a WHV in Australia but not sure what to expect with the application process. I’ve written this guide to take you through the process and make step-by-step. The application process for a WHV – Subclass 417 visa in Australia allows people (typically aged 18-30 or 18-35, depending on your country of origin) to work and holiday in Australia.

Here’s a general guide to the application process:

1. Check Eligibility

   – Age: You must be within the eligible age range (18-30 or 18-35).

   – Country of Citizenship: Ensure you are from an eligible country.

   – Financial Support: You need sufficient funds (usually AUD 5,000 or €3,000) for initial support.

   – Health Requirements: A health check may be required – this is generally if you have pre-existing conditions

   – Character Requirements: You need to provide police certificates.

2. Gather Required Documents

Make sure all the documents you upload are readable!

   – Passport: A valid passport is required.

   – Proof of funds: Bank statements or other financial proof.

   – Health and character documents: These vary by country and individual circumstances. – A police certificate and/or medical report

3. Apply Online

The beauty of the whole process is that you can do it all online. No need to go to embassies (like the Japanese WHV), you can do it all from the comfort of home.

   – I’ve attached the link to the ImmiAccount portal on the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs website. You will need to create an account to begin the application process.

   – Select the appropriate subclass (417) based on your country and complete the online application by filling out each step.

As long as you have all your documents at the ready, it’s a case of filling in your personal details and uploading the documents.

   – Pay the visa fee (around AUD 650).

   – You will receive an email of acknowledgement stating the Department of Affairs has received your application and is processing.

4. Submit Biometrics or Health Exams (if required)

   – After submission, you may be asked for biometrics or to undergo a health examination, which can be done at approved centres.

This is generally only the case if you have pre-existing conditions or work in a specified industry (e.g. healthcare)

5. Await Processing

   – Processing times can vary, but you can check estimated processing times on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Personally, myself and Ben’s WHV got accepted within minutes (this was May 2023) but I’ve heard it can take up to a few weeks

6. Visa Decision

– Once your application has been processed, you will receive an email (hopefully) saying your visa has been granted.

   – Once granted, you have 1 year to enter Australia and start working and travelling for up to 12 months.

   – The 12 months begins the day you arrive in Australia
